Objectives

  • Describe preoperative, operative, and postoperative patient care in the principal component areas of general surgery: diseases of the head and neck, breast, skin and soft tissues, alimentary tract, abdomen, vascular system, endocrine system, trauma management, emergency operations, and critical surgical care.
  • Discuss perioperative patient care principles in cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric surgery, and transplant surgery.
  • Summarize clinical care for common problems in urology, gynecology, orthopedics, and burns.
  • Demonstrate understanding of tumor staging and appropriate surgical and nonsurgical management.
  • Discuss non-operative management options for patients not requiring surgical intervention, such as pancreatitis and portal hypertension.
  • Outline appropriate use of newer diagnostic and therapeutic methods including laser applications, stereotactic breast biopsy, gastrointestinal physiologic testing, vascular diagnostic evaluation, ultrasonography, and endorectal ultrasound.
